Located in Crépy-en-Valois, the Saint-Denis church is a building steeped in history, whose origins date back to the beginning of the 11th century.e century. Dedicated to Saint Denis, the first bishop of Paris, it is said to have been built on the site of a chapel in the castle of Gautier II de Vexin, an influential lord of the time.

The church evolved over the centuries, moving from Romanesque to Gothic style. The nave, one of the oldest parts, reflects the sober architecture of the 12th century.e century. Gothic style quickly left its mark on the building, particularly the transept and the capitals, decorated with elegant sculptures.

In 1434, during the siege of Crépy-en-Valois, the church suffered significant damage. It was rebuilt in a flamboyant Gothic style in 1457. This remodeling gave the building its current form: a monumental ensemble 52 meters long.

Remarkable architecture

Closed and sold as national property during the French Revolution in 1792, the church became a warehouse. In 1802, it was bought by three townspeople and returned to the parish. The XNUMXth centurye century is marked by a major restoration campaign.

Listed as a historic monument in 1977, the church benefits from protection that ensures its preservation. More recently, contemporary stained-glass windows by Claude Courageux, installed in the XNUMXth centurye century, bring a modern touch to this thousand-year-old building.

The Church of Saint-Denis is particularly distinguished by its architecture, which combines Romanesque and Gothic styles. Indeed, the nave, with its sobriety typical of the Romanesque style, contrasts with the flamboyant Gothic choir, richly sculpted and vaulted. The stone spire, added in the 19th centurye century, reinforces the impression of verticality and majesty.

Today, the Saint-Denis church is a witness to the history of Crépy-en-Valois, but also a place of worship still in operation where masses are celebrated every Sunday.
