Built on a low-lying limestone plateau, Péroy-les-Gombries is a picturesque village in the canton of Nanteuil-le-Haudouin, offering varied landscapes between the fertile plateau of Gombrie to the south and the sandy wood of Roy to the north. The history of the commune dates back to the Gallo-Roman era, when the Celts, attracted by the water and light soils, settled in this wooded region, rich in resources.
Medieval clearings shaped the region, giving rise to villages with names evocative of nature. The forest played a crucial role in the development of Péroy-les-Gombries, becoming an economic issue under the Ancien Régime with the royal crane factory of Nanteuil, which extended into the Péroy woods.
The Slide Stone
Nestled in the heart of the Bois du Roi forest , near Péroy-les-Gombries in the Oise department, the Pierre Glissoire (Sliding Stone) is a remarkable natural site blending geological heritage, biodiversity, and local traditions. This jumble of sandstone, emerging from a landscape of heathland and acidic grasslands, offers a unique setting for nature lovers and hikers. An 800-meter discovery trail winds through a pine forest, leading visitors to this intriguing rock formation. The site covers 15 hectares and is home to fauna and flora characteristic of sandy environments, notably the Sand Sedge, a rare inland plant. The Pierre Glissoire is also surrounded by legends. According to local tradition, women seeking fertility would slide down it, believing that this ritual would promote conception or ease childbirth. Easily accessible, the Pierre Glissoire is an ideal destination for a getaway combining natural discovery and immersion in the ancestral beliefs of the Valois region.
